Listening All Night To The Rain is John Akomfrah's immersive installation at Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, presented with TBA21. Five audiovisual pieces on diaspora, migration, memory and climate change, told through a non-linear narrative that moves between documentary and fiction, across eras and geographies.
The question was how to translate that into graphic language. These are not concepts you can illustrate. Migration, memory, displacement: everything in the work is intangible, layered, in motion. So instead of representing them, we let the identity behave like them. Bands of blurred gradients, always moving, never fully resolved. Type that sits slightly out of place, displaced from itself, in the logo and across the texts.
