Mere Mortals is an album by Floating Points, composed for and performed by the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra.
The idea for the design was already contained within the work itself, framing the album as Pandora’s box. Hope, the protagonist, is trapped in a burning world, and the idea of setting her free had to be built into the design itself.
The solution was a translucent case that encloses the record. The moment you open it and lift the cover, you set Hope free. The silhouette of hands reaching toward a bird holds that same gesture, that same drive to escape.
The rest of the visual system follows the same idea, turning the entire opening experience into a symbolic representation of the work itself.
